What's New?

After a final consultation, I added tiger paw prints along side the hoof prints on the sand to symbolize the Tiger and Bull in the Chinese New Year animals.

I added the foot prints, sprayed sand on the beach, readjusted the sky colors and did some highlighting of the mountains.

I fine tune the gold border and start detailing the mountains and ocean.

The border is filled in but needs some work still.  It's meant to look like enamel on gold.

Hanalei Honey is my working title.  The border represents the fertility as well as an Asian theme.  It's the first time I've done a border so elaborate like this.

I detail the tree branch, mountains, water and add stars to the sky.

After filling in the clouds, I work on the mountains.

I fill in the sky and then work on the clouds

I fill in the water and begin filling in the sky from the bottom up.

I make sure and blend everything so as to not to leave any white of the canvas showing through the water.

I fill in the water and then the rocks

I normally start at the light source which would have been the moon but I felt like starting on the wave.

This is my wash sketch

"Raiders" - 16x18 original oil on gallery wrap canvas.

A die hard, season ticket holder asked me to do this.  It is done on a gallery wrap canvas and reads "Commitment to Excellence" on the sides.

"First Love" start.  I begin with putting a gesso texture on the canvas where I've done an initial sketch on.  This adds a couple extra steps to my painting but adds a 3-dimensionality to them.  I give it 2 weeks to dry since the gesso is poured over the sketch rather thickly.

I painting the turtles by going from dark to light.

I now paint the other turtle

Here I start the water with the source of light.

I want the feeling that the sun is far away.

I do a light to dark gradient in the water to help the illusion of distance and perspective.

After filling in the water, I start the light rays coming from the sun and touching the turtles.  I also start my final detailing of the turtles.  This takes some time and although it may not look like much, it adds to the realism of the entire piece.

I added the light rays and am finalizing the details on the turtles.

I made some minor adjustments according to my collector's request.  I also lightened the sun rays a bit as well as added some highlights on the flippers and wrinkles.  The actual painting isn't as bright in the sun as this picture because the photo program inhances the contrast on them.

After consultation with my collectors, made appropriate changes to the flipper and shell of the turtle on the right.  I've also been adding detail to both turtles.

Start of "Turtle Beach", 30x30 Original oil on canvas.

Right off the bat I changed the positions of the turtles from the original sketch that was submitted to my collectors.  Flexibility is a crucial aspect of being an artist.  This is before I changed the positions.

I initially do a wash to get a general idea of what I'm doing.

After the wash, I do some actual painting, trying to get as close to finish as I can.

After spraying in the sand, I start the sky.

I fill in the sky and make sure it's harmonious with the colors of the sand.

After changing the body position of the turtle in the water, I start detailing the water, turtles and foam on the sand.

I wasn't happy with the open sky on the top right side so I added some more clouds to create perspective and depth of the sky.

I added details to the distant land formation and highlights to the clouds.

I added sparkles on the water as the sun sets.

"Lost & Found" - 24 x 30 Original oil.  So be published.

Tired and lost, this mermaid is glad to see a friendly face as she rests upon the beach for a spell.

This is the finished painting.   I changed the 2 yellow tangs to 2 tear drop butterfly fish to add more interest.  There were too many yellow fish going on.  I also added black coral on the left side, a tinker's butterfly in the upper left next to the blue stripe butterfly fish and I pulled the two sides together by filling in the cave in the middle.

For those interested, it's going to be available as a Limited Edition Giclee on canvas.   Please inquire.

Here is the finish.  I added more highlights to the turtle and a harlequin shrimp on the bottom left to give the starfish company.

At the unveiling mass on the 125th Anniversary celebration of Mother Marianne and 6 Sisters of St.Francis arriving in Hawaii.

That's the painting way back behind the alter.

"Birds of Paradise" - Original oil on canvas framed in mango/Koa veneer with dark green scoop

"Azul Moon" - 10x14 original oil

I was asked by the general manager of the Ihilani hotel to paint something that would represent the Azul restaurant which is a fine dining restaurant.  This is my interpretation of it.

"Gathering Place" - 20x48 original oil

This painting represents the Japanese restaurant Ushio Tei at the Ihilani hotel.

"Ko Olina Twilight" - 24x48 original oil.

This painting is a view of the first lagoon from the Ihilani hotel pool area.  I romanticized the view by making both the moon and sun lights visible at the same time.
